Siradel Planner is one of solutions we use to support our national and international spectrum management.

Ofcom’s ability to manage spectrum with confidence depends upon reliable prediction of radio wave behaviour, and this expertise is becoming increasingly important due to the changing spectrum usage landscape and emergence of new technologies. Ofcom relies on a range of radio wave prediction methods to obtain a meaningful understanding of the way in which radio waves interact with terrain, ground cover, the atmosphere and rain, all of which impact different frequencies to varying degrees.  Improving our expertise in propagation modelling and having access to the state of art prediction methods is crucial for our understanding of the spectrum environment and its efficient use.

In 2024/25, we conducted technical studies employing Siradel’s fully deterministic propagation model “Volcano” alongside high-resolution 3D topographic datasets. These studies examine the key propagation mechanisms that should be considered for reliable predictions in highly built-up environments. Our findings contribute to the ongoing work of ITU-R Study Group 3 (Radio wave propagation) helping to refine propagation models for the spectrum sharing studies ahead of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27).
